Berkeley is a city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area in northern Alameda County. Berkeley exudes an atmosphere befitting its position as one of the country's leading educational centers. Berkeley is the site of the University of California, Berkeley, the oldest of the University of California system, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It is also home to the Graduate Theological Union. The city is noted as one of the most politically liberal in the nation. Berkeley has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters. Berkeley is served by Amtrak (Capitol Corridor), AC Transit, BART (Downtown Berkeley Station, North Berkeley, and Ashby Station) and bus shuttles. The Eastshore Freeway (Interstate 80 and Interstate 580) runs along the bay shoreline. Berkeley has one of the highest rates of bicycle and pedestrian commuting in the nation. Berkeley Marina serves as a base for a large charter boat fleet and also has a free 3,000 foot public fishing pier. Water sports, model yacht racing and bird watching are popular on the mile long saltwater lake in Aquatic Park at the foot of Bancroft Way.
